African American History in the Collections

This selection from the Harvard Art Museums’ collections was compiled as a resource for faculty teaching courses that engage with the Black experience in the United States. Dating from the turn of the 19th-century to the present day, materials relate to topics including slavery, abolition, emancipation, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights Movement. The selection also includes works by contemporary artists that reflect on African American history as well as our current socio-political moment.
