Virtual Spotlight Tour: The Black Body in Contemporary Drawings by Toyin Ojih Odutola, with Sophia Scott ’25

A smiling young woman, wearing a light gray sweater, looks out at the viewer from a blurry interior. Floating over her right shoulder is a multicolored drawing representing the monumental head of a Black man before a landscape with boats.
One work Sophia Scott will spotlight is Toyin Ojih Odutola’s Nanban (2020), a drawing made with colored pencil, graphite, and ink on Dura-Lar.

In this virtual Spotlight Tour, in honor of Black History Month, Sophia Scott ’25 will explore the drawing practice of Toyin Ojih Odutola, a contemporary artist interested in mark-making, surface, and the Black body. Born in Nigeria in 1985 and raised in the United States, Ojih Odutola lives and works in New York. Scott will focus on Nanban, The Trap Vowel, and Save Face, three recently acquired drawings that will appear in the upcoming exhibition Future Minded: New Works in the Collection (March 1–July 21, 2024). These compelling drawings have semi-reflective surfaces that provocatively hinder viewers from seeing the imagery all at once, or from a single point of view.
