A Canvas of Light

Renzo Piano’s Light Machine at work throughout the new Harvard Art Museums facility.

As we’re preparing to open the new Harvard Art Museums facility in November, we can’t help but notice Renzo Piano’s Light Machine at work, painting the empty spaces with controlled, natural light. Near the apex of the glass roof, light filters through glass and steel, creating a kaleidoscope of patterns across matte and refracting surfaces. On the fourth floor, the intricate shading system that will help protect works of art creates variations of stripes. In another room, light is boxed in by shadow, casting a table of light on the floor. If the Light Machine is this entrancing now, we can only imagine how dramatic it will be once the art is installed.
