Films by Rebecca Horn, Part 1

Join us for a screening of early films by German artist Rebecca Horn, Performances 1 (1972; 22 min.) and Der Eintänzer (The Gigolo) (1978; 47 min.).

The earliest of Horn’s fleeting performances, largely focused on the human body, were captured in drawings, notes, photographic stills, and beginning in 1970, film. Performances 1 includes the earliest of these; while primarily documentary, several rely on techniques specific to the medium, such as stop-action. Made in her New York studio, Der Eintänzer (The Gigolo) —Horn’s first full-length feature film—turns the artist’s kinetic sculptures into active protagonists in the film narrative.

All films in this program complement Rebecca Horn: “Work in Progress,” currently on view in the University Research Gallery on Level 3. Films will be shown in Menschel Hall following introductory remarks by Lynette Roth, the Daimler-Benz Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum.
