Seeing Is Believing: A History of Photography
The works of art in this installation complement a General Education course on the history of photography from its origins to the digital era. Works by Mathew Brady, Eadweard Muybridge, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Frederick Sommer, Lorna Simpson, and Louise Lawler, among others, provide opportunities to reflect on the role of photography as an engine of belief in various historical moments and cultural domains. The course is taught by Robin Kelsey, Shirley Carter Burden Professor of Photography, Harvard University.
The installation is made possible by funding from the Gurel Student Exhibition Fund.
Teaching gallery installations are mounted in conjunction with Harvard University undergraduate and graduate courses and feature selected objects from the Harvard Art Museums collections. Coordinated by Amy Brauer, Diane Heath Beever Curator of the Collection, Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art, Harvard Art Museums.
