Up-Close Seminar: Screen Play—Festivals, Famous Sites, and Genre Painting in Japanese Screens

Seminar

Harvard Art Museums
32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

Festivals, seasonal activities, and famous sites have long been deeply interconnected in Japanese painting. Come learn about these connections with Quintana Heathman, Fellow in Japanese Art, as she discusses a pair of 17th-century folding screens (byōbu) depicting two famed Kyoto horse racing festivals. These stunning screens represent not only an important moment in the development of genre painting in Japan, but also the complex interactions of time, place, and space in Japanese painting.
The seminar will take place in the Art Study Center, Level 4.
