Abby Cramer’s work as the museums’ digital asset manager and digital archivist bridges the Department of Digital Infrastructure and Emerging Technology and Harvard Art Museums Archives. While her role encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities, the core of her work revolves around file lifecycle management. She advises departments and divisions on workflow and administers many of the systems used to create, access, store, and share digital files. As those files shift from active to inactive, Cramer facilitates their transfer to the archives and enables their preservation, discovery, access, and reuse. The unique nature of this role allows her to bring an archives/records management perspective to the information technology work she does, and vice versa. This allows the Harvard Art Museums to adapt to technological changes while maintaining the integrity of long-term storage and preservation methodologies. She also works closely with colleagues across the museums to manage the preservation of and access to digital components of time-based media works.
