Pavilions of Love: A Ritual Space in Indian Painting

This installation explores the iconography of the pavilion as a setting for earthly and spiritual love in Rajput paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries. The featured works trace the evolution of the pavilion through a variety of courtly painting schools from north and west India. This installation complements Overlapping Realms: Arts of the Islamic World and India, 900–1900, a sampling of visual arts by the varied peoples who inhabited the region stretching from southern Europe through South Asia.
