Members Day Trip: Dighton Rock and New Bedford Whaling Museum

Join us as we hit the road to explore one of the most celebrated objects in Harvard’s Philosophy Chamber, which is the focus of our current special exhibition, The Philosophy Chamber: Art and Science in Harvard’s Teaching Cabinet 1766–1820. We’ll begin our day with a tour of the exhibition by Ethan Lasser, the Theodore E. Stebbins Jr. Curator of American Art and head of the Division of European and American Art. We’ll then travel to the Dighton Rock Museum, in Berkley, Massachusetts, where we’ll be met by archaeologist Ellen Berkland and staff from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Following lunch nearby, we’ll continue on to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, where we’ll enjoy docent-led tours and a behind-the-scenes look at objects in their library reading room. Along with Ethan Lasser, we’ll be joined by Anne Driesse, senior conservator of works of art on paper at the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies.

Our day begins promptly at 9am with a tour at the Harvard Art Museums. Please enter through the Broadway entrance. Following our tour, we’ll depart by bus on Quincy Street a few minutes after 10am.
