An elderly woman sits in the street holding a bowl

Slashing black brushstrokes show an elderly woman in a black shawl who sits on a step in front of a low, pointed iron gate. She holds an empty bowl in her lap in one hand and her other rests listlessly on her knee. She wears a shapeless ankle length dress and small pointed shoes. Her head tilts back slightly and her face is gaunt and wrinkled. Her eyes gaze up and to the right but seem to see nothing.
