Descriptions

Commentary
Anselm Kiefer called his series of staged self-portraits from 1969 "Occupations" ("Besetzungen"). About two years later he arranged 18 of these photographs in the sequence that was subsequently published as "Occupations 1969" ("Besetzungen 1969") in this issue of the Cologne art journal "Interfunktionen," no. 12 (1975). Several of the photographs are reproduced with typed captions identifying the location in which the photograph was made. The caption accompanying the first image reads: "Anselm Kiefer / Between summer and fall 1969 I occupied Switzerland, France, and Italy. Some photographs." ("Anselm Kiefer / Zwischen Sommer und Herbst 1969 habe ich die Schweiz, Frankreich und Italien besetzt. Ein paar Fotos.")
