The colored photograph depicts a shoreline, with the words TRENCH FEVER dug into the sand next to the water. The water comprises three-quarters of the composition. There are numerous foot prints next to the words, which run parallel to the water and tideline. The typed inscription below the image reads DUG OUT SAND (1969) / 3' X 19' / SHORELINE NEAR NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. Along the bottom edge of the artwork there is a handwritten inscription with the edition number and artist's signature.
