Inscriptions and Marks seal: Impressed on the outside of each scroll and on the bottom of each wooden storage box is a "symbolic seal" indicating the title of each scroll--i.e., North, East, South, West, or Central. Impressed on the bottom of each storage box-i.e., on the underside-is a square, red, relief seal reading "Qiu Mai Xie Zhen". Michael Cherney himself carved the seal impressed on each photograph as well as the seal impressed on the top and bottom of each storage box. The seals are carved in Shoushan soapstone.
