Descriptions Commentary The carved wooden angel form in Cheryl Laemmle's prints is an early iteration of the birch-bark figures in her later paintings. These imaginary figures made of organic material are influenced by her time spent in the mountains of the Adirondacks between 1982-1983 and the toys her grandfather carved for her out of birch. The claustrophobic space created with the large childlike figures in the foreground against a shallow dark background reveal her play between fantasy and pessimism, reality and illusion. Laemmle's use of boxes in her prints is influenced by Joseph Cornell iconic box assemblages. Verification Level This record has been reviewed by the curatorial staff but may be incomplete.
