Technical Observations: The patina features brown deposits over various green and blue corrosion products, red cuprite, and some exposed brown metallic surface. The pot is complete, although the surface is quite corroded.

The small round pot was cast by the lost-wax process, and the surface detail was most likely created on the wax model. Irregular blobs of excess metal are visible on the interior. One of the holes in the small handles reveals a flange on its upper surface that was probably formed in the wax. Careful removal of some surface corrosion reveals ancient rough tool marks from finishing after casting. On the bottom of the pot, there are regular linear tool marks that may have been made by an ancient file, as indicated by the fact that the cross lines are even and parallel.

Descriptions

Description
This cylindrical vessel flares from the mouth to the base. The bottom is slightly convex and undecorated. The top of the vessel is recessed for placement of a lid. The lid would have rested on the raised band encircling the vessel below the lip, which bears an incised herringbone pattern around much of the exterior. The band includes two thick horizontal loops for securing a lid. The remainder of the vessel is smooth and undecorated. A horse-headed lid, 1920.44.226, fits on this vessel; the two pieces may have come to the museum together, with the lid subsequently being separated and mislabeled.
