Short, square body; cylindrical neck; wide, flat shoulder; applied handle. Classification: C. Isings, Roman Glass from Dated Finds (Djakarta: Groningen, 1957), form 50A Commentary Square bottles such as this became prominent in the first century CE when they were used to transport goods throughout the Roman Empire. The thick-walls strengthened the vessels and the square shape permitted many bottles to be packed together during shipment.
