Descriptions

Description
Ribbon-type handle, spherical body with base ring, long cylindrical neck with slightly flared mouth and flat rim. Scoring on shoulder. U-shaped chip at base and small chips in the lip. Wheel made of reddish buff clay with lustrous red slip.

Classification: This vessel was listed as an example of ESA Form 104A by John Hayes (See Hayes 1985, p. 43, as CVA Robinson Coll. I, tav. III.10).
Commentary
This jug is an example of Eastern Sigillata A Ware (“ESA”), a type of pottery produced in northern Syria in the region of greater Antioch (modern Antakya, in the Hatay region of modern Turkey). Fine table wares (cups, bowls, plates, platters, and pitchers) for table service, drinking, and dining were produced in ESA from the late second century BCE to the 2nd century CE.
