The portrait is taken from the waist up. Three-quarter view of his face reveals deep set eyes, he’s wearing a tight high white collar that covers his jaw and dark jacket and coat. His face is wrinkled, closed mouth, stiff posture, and he looks slightly to the left. Light illuminates the subject from the top, accentuating his deep-set eyes. His hands are folded in his lap, and his partial shadow is seen on the left, against a plain dark background.
