Four figures sit in chairs beside a low terrace wall. They all appear to be women wearing elaborate hats. The figure on the left is bending down toward an object on the ground. A standing figure to their right looks down at a seated child wearing a wide round sun hat. A vase of flowers sits on the terrace railing. Just beyond it is the top of a tree. In the background to the right is a vague sketch of the contours of buildings, suggesting a cityscape in the distance. Whistler’s “butterfly” signature is written at bottom left.
