Descriptions

Commentary
The subject of this portrait has, traditionally, been considered to be Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt. Recently, however, an impression in the collection of S. William Pelletier with the inscription in a 17th-c. hand "Petrus Sylvius" has suggested an identification as a portrait of the son of Jan Cornelis Sylvius, the subject of one of Rembrandt's most famous etched portraits and the guardian of Rembrandt's wife Saskia. Father and son were Protestant ministers; at the date of this etching the son would have been twenty-seven years old. See the catalogue of the Pelletier Rembrandt collection published by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (2004), no.17.
