- inscription: Around edge of recto: 1st style. Every time I put the brush on the canvas it was with one pure color mixed with white to get the light + shade. This was painted about the same time as my picture in the Champs de Mars (1898) and in the same manner. Different subjects are handled in slightly different ways even when painted in the same style.
