A man stands with one hand on his hip and his other hand holding a tophat which is upturned on a table next to him. The table is covered in a brightly patterned cloth, the only color in the portrait. The man wears black and brown riding boots, off-white tight pants, a long black jacket, a black vest, and a white shirt which features ruffles on his chest and neck. He is cleanshaven with hair that is either short or pulled away from his face. He looks directly at the viewer with an expression of amusement and self-assuredness.

Notes:

Vitta put the piece up for sale at Galerie Charpentier, March 15, 1935, where it was lot 8; it was bought in at that sale.

Winthrop paid Fr 200,000 for this piece and 1943.246. Wildenstein also played an unspecified role in Birnbaums' purchase of the painting.
