Louis Comfort Tiffany, American (New York, NY 1848-1933 New York, NY) Title Paper clip Classification Tools and Equipment Work Type tool/equipment Date c. 1895 Culture American Persistent Link https://hvrd.art/o/222817 Physical Descriptions Medium Copper alloy and glass Dimensions 3.5 x 6.3 x 11 cm (1 3/8 x 2 1/2 x 4 5/16 in.) Technical Details Chemical Composition: XRF analysis was undertaken on the front and back. Comparison showed that the dark green areas of the front had significant levels of barium, chromium and iron and higher zinc than cleaner more metallic areas of the back. This suggests an artificial pigmented layer is present on the front. Analysis of a metallic area on the back corner indicated a mixed copper alloy with significant copper, zinc, lead and tin, with the zinc content significantly higher than the tin. It is probably best termed a quaternary copper alloy but could be described as impure brass if prefered.
