Descriptions

Description
Photographic reproduction of a tracing of the mosaics in the South Vestibule in of the Hagia Sophia showing the virgin frontally in the center with Christ Child in her lap, Justinian on the left holding a representation of the Hagia Sophia with the south facade facing forward, and Constantine on the right presenting a miniature gate of the city of Constantinople. The key iconographic components are carefully traced out with individualized tesserae outlined and shaded, whereas some background areas are left blank. The photographic reproduction is based on tracings made on the spot with tracing paper over the actual mosaics by carefully defining the shape and size of each individual mosaic tessera in the composition.
