Description
The scenes in this painting depict the episodes from the life of Krishna, particularly those pertaining to his kidnapping of Rukmini. At Rukmini’s request, Krishna kidnaps and elopes with her to prevent an unwanted marriage with the evil king Shishupala, who is also Krishna’s cousin. Later, Rukmini became Krishna's principal wife and queen. This folio belongs to an illustrated manuscript of the tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana produced in Malwa. The verso of the folio contains the Sanskrit text of the Bhagavata Purana from chapter 63 written in Devanagari script. 1958.120 is another folio from the same manuscript. Rajput, Rajasthani, Malwa School.
