The scene is bracketed by two large trees, a palm tree and a pine tree with a large parrot resting on its branch. Exotic plants and a blue heron appear in the foreground. In the middle ground, a four-column portico with a large bell straddles a land mass through which a waterfall flows. The background presents a distant view of snowcapped mountains. This Louis XV chinoiserie tapestry belongs to the so-called "Chinese landscape series" which was produced in several sets. All of the tapestries in the series are brightly colored; they feature an evocative juxtaposition of architecture, unusual land formations, exotic flora, water, and birds. The border contains large flowers and paisley motifs. A likely source of influence is the Beauvais "Emperor of China" tapestry series designed before 1690.
