244 Flat Tablet Combining Anthropomorphic Figure and Animal Heads
Mottled light green and whitish jade. The elements engraved here are the same as in the foregoing object, but the man’s head in this case is more distinctly human, owing particularly to the profile of the chin. Moreover, the head is rendered as a distinct unit, rather than merging with the adjoining animal head. The animal’s elongated tusk or tongue, however, continues into the curved bands of what reads as the gentleman’s long hair. A second animal head is seen in the same position as in No. 243. The buttocks and crouching legs form the lower part of this composition; there is no appendage comparable to that of the preceding piece. There are small perforations near the upper and lower edges. Late Western Chou.
