592 Heavy Disk with Pattern of Spirals in Relief
The pattern of this sturdy disk, which is fashioned of an unusual variety of russet brown, and greenish gray jade, seems to be sui generis. It differs in both design and technique from the many instances of plastic curls or comma-shaped spirals earlier described. In the present case, the spirals are recurved (like question marks) and their tails extend across the “aisles” separating the rows; moreover, these spirals are carved out in such a manner that their beveled outer contours rise up steeply, while on the inner side they slope gently, merging imperceptibly into the ground. Surprisingly, there remain no traces whatsoever of the working process. Han or later.
