458 Scabbard Buckle
Yellowish gray translucent jade, showing signs of incipient calcification. The object has the form of a slender rectangular bar with a bracket, the same width as the bar, projecting high up on the underside. The ends of the bar turn back, forming a curve at the top and a beveled hook at the bottom. The upper side is decorated with a pair of eyes and striated horns(?), followed by a symmetrical row of paired C -shaped volutes, facing alternately outward and inward. The design is enlivened by incised lines, volutes, and cross-hatched diamond and triangles. The borders are raised; the bevel at the lower end is left plain. This piece is carved in a strikingly precise manner, with sharply ground edges and corners, and is polished to a high gloss. Late Eastern Chou or Western Han.
