Descriptions

Commentary
The quasi-Surrealist portrait of Martha Graham and her troupe of dancers is interesting in and of itself, but the main value of the engraving seems to be its record of yet another, so far unrecorded, participant in Atelier 17 during its New York incarnation. Maloney studied at the New School for Social Research after his release from the Navy during or after WWII. The print evidences every sign, in materials, style, and printing quality, of having been created under the tutelage of Stanley William Hayter, whose Atelier 17 operated under the aegis of the New School through the 1945-46 academic year. Thus it seems reasonable to assign a date of ca. 1945 to this print. Maloney is not recorded in the list of Atelier 17 participants (admittedly incomplete) published in: Joan Moser, "Atelier 17" (1977), but this catalogue gives a useful description and chronology of the print workshop's years in New York.
