- gallery label: formerly back of frame: [printed:] LUCIEN GOLDSCHMIDT, Inc. / 1117 MADISON AVENUE NEW YORK N.Y. 10028 / Rare & Fine Books / French Books / Prints & Drawings; [typed:] MOITTE (Jean Guillaume) 1746-1810. / Sleeping young peasant, in the middle of greenery. / Original pencil drawing, on old mount with cartouche of gardening implements at the bottom, 4 1/4 x 6 5/8". / Moitte's precocious talent impressed Pigalle who gave / him lessons of sculpture. In 1768 he obtained the "Prix / de Rome" for his "David". In 1773 he designed the draw- / ings for Auguste, the Royal jeweler. Apart from his / sculptures and bas-reliefs he designed portraits, book / illustrations, etc.

Moitte Jean Guillaume / 1747-1810 / Dessinateur, né à Paris en 1747 s'adonna de préférence à la sculpture. / Pigalle, que l'on regardait comme le premier sculpteur de son temps, sollicita la / faveur de l'avoir pour élève et l'aida à remporter le grand prix de sculpture / en 1768_ En 1773 Auguste, orfèvre du roi, se l'attacha comme modeleur / et dessinateur. Ses plus beaux ouvrages furent faits d'après les dessins de / l'artiste et eurent une incontestable supériorité sur ceux de ses confrères. / Il participa à l'ornementation des livres suivants: Le Temple de Guide, les / dessins du frontispice de la Galerie de Florence et de la Dédiace au Duc de / Toscane, une Suite à la manière noire pour Télémaque, etc. etc. / Il fut nommé de l'ancienne académie et de l'Institut / Il est mort le 2 mai 1810. - watermark: [partial]
