Descriptions

Description
Small tripod incense burner with globular body, three clawed cabriole legs, and cabochon jewel decoration around the shoulders; pinkish white earthenware with lead-fluxed cobalt-blue, copper-green, and clear glazes over a white slip ground and applique decoration on the exterior, and with lead-fluxed pale yellow glaze on the interior; underside of vessel and feet unglazed. Sancai ware. From northern China, Henan, Hebei, or Shaanxi province.
Commentary
Compare to:
(1) Sancai earthenware censer of similar form attributed to the Tang dynasty excavated in 1977 from Xitiangezhuang, Miyun county, Beijing, now in the Capital Museum, Beijing. See Zhongguo chutu ciqi quanji [Complete Collection of Chinese Ceramics Unearthed in China], vol. 1: Beijing (Beijing: Kexue chubanshe, 2008), no. 8.
(2) Sancai earthenware censer of similar form and with applique decoration excavated from the Huangye kilns at Gongyi, Henan province, now in the Henan Museum.
