Descriptions

Description
Globular jar with flared mouth, cylindrical neck, globular body, lower portion of body tapering inward to a countersunk base, and two loop supports for simulated ring handles on the shoulders; three horizontal ridged borders encircle the shoulders, creating wide horizontal friezes with decoration of stylized animals and scrolling clouds; light gray stoneware with thin natural ash glaze over top portion of vessel, the lower half and base unglazed. One of a pair with 2006.170.209.
Commentary
Compare to:
(1) Covered proto-porcelain jar of closely related form with same scrolling-cloud pattern excavated in 1992 from an Eastern Han brick tomb in Luoyang city, Henan province. See Wenwu [Cultural Relics] 12 (1992): 13, fig. 11.5.
