Descriptions

Description
Small jar with bulbous body, lower portion tapering inward to a flat base, and with single strap handle; buff earthenware with applique handle and applique decoration forming diagonal lines of dashes across the body. Majiayao culture, Banshan type. From the upper Yellow River valley region; southern Ningxia province.
Commentary
Compare to:
(1) Small red earthenware jar of closely related form excavated from a Banshan cemetery in Dibaping, Guanghe county, Gansu province. See Kaogu Xuebao 2 (1978): 193-210, pl. 9.5.
(2) Small earthenware jars of similar form excavated from a Banshan tomb in Huazhaizi, near Lanzhou, Gansu province. See Kaogu Xuebao 2 (1980): 221-38, pl. 7.3 and pl. 8.1.
