Description
Ovoid jar with short, cylindrical neck, broad shoulders, sides tapering inward to a small, flat base, and two strap lug handles positioned bilaterally below the shoulder; buff earthenware with geometric decoration painted in black and burgundy slips before firing; painted designs include multiple rows of black sawtooth designs encircling the shoulders between horizontal bands of burgundy colored slip. Majiayao culture, Banshan type. From the upper Yellow River valley region; Gansu, Qinghai, or Ningxia province.
Commentary
Compare to:
Jar of the same form with similar bichrome painted design of horizontal lines was excavated in 1975 from a Banshan site in Yangjialeng, Kangle county, Gansu province, now at the Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture Museum, Gansu. See Zhongguo taoci quanji (The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramics), vol. 1: Xinshiqi shidai (Neolithic period) (Shanghai: Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 2000), no. 100, pp. 134 and 280.
