- Description
- Covered cylindrical jar with three small triangular tabs descending from a flat rim, the conical cover with conical-dish shaped knob; thinly potted gray earthenware with abstract decoration cold-painted in red pigment. Dawenkou culture. From the middle and lower Yellow River valley regions; Shandong, northern Jiangsu, northern Anhui, and eastern Henan provinces.

Compare to:
(1) Earthenware jar of very similar form with similar knobbed cover excavated in 1959 at Dawenkou, Tai’an, Shandong province. See Shandong sheng wenwu guanlichu [Shandong Bureau of Cultural Relics Management], Dawenkou: xinshiqi shidai muzang fajue baogao [Dawenkou: Neolithic period cemetery excavation report] (Beijing: Wenwu chubanshe, 1974), pl. 71.1.
(2) Earthenware cup of similar form, with same flattened rim and small triangular tabs also excavated at Dawenkou. See ibid., pl. 72.8.
