Descriptions

Commentary: Augustus John studied at the Slade School of Art at University College London. Although not very well known today, he was called one of the most celebrated artists of his day. Much of his work consists of portraits. His portrait etchings were recognized for the intensity of their psychological insights and considered "cruel" in their truth of depiction. John frequently used his artistic acquaintences as models this is a portrait of the sculptor Jacob Epstein.
