- label: Alleanza Co-operativa, Torino. The 2 largest cooperative societies amalgamated in 1899, although they keep their actual membership still distinct. This united Society owns 20 branch stores in common, besides chemists shops, bakeries, wine cellars, a circulating library, a theatre and a restaurant. In its Babies Dispensary it provides sterilized milk at cost to children of every class, whether of members or otherwise, as well as instruction and assistance to the mothers in the upbringing of infants. This battle with infant mortality is stated to have brought down the death rate to 20 per 1000 of children attending the Society's Dispensary as against 180 per 1000 in the town generally. The Society also maintains a regular staff of doctors, engaged to attend members free of cost.
