Legacies of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis in Turkey

This poster for the 24hH event shows two images: the one on top is a panoramic view of green and yellow fields with rising hills against a clear blue sky. Below this image is a topographical satellite map of the earth with a red arc drawn between Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Sardis, Turkey. In the upper right-hand corner of the poster is a red and white logo with “24hH” written in black. Next to that in a rectangular box are the words “Harvard Art Museums/Sardis.” In between the two images are the words “Legacies of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis in Turkey.”

Special Event

Staying up late? Join the Sardis team live on YouTube for a presentation as part of Worldwide Week at Harvard’s 24hH: 24 Hours of Harvard.

Now in its 63rd consecutive year, the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis excavates, conserves, and publishes on aspects of the ancient city of Sardis in western Turkey, from prehistoric through Islamic periods. The expedition is one of the longest ongoing international projects at Harvard and has created a remarkable legacy of collaboration and mutual engagement between Turkish scholars and students, members of the professional, government, and local communities, and those at Harvard and other international institutions.

In this presentation—which includes live discussions and pre-recorded videos—multiple facets of the extraordinary relationships the project has fostered in Turkey will be brought to light. The Sardis team hopes to show the extent of the major footprint of the facilities at the site, as well as some of the monuments that have been unearthed and the involvement of the expedition’s stakeholders.
